Poem #28
Rhyme
This is not normal
but this is not paranormal
nothing really is
its something like a pop quiz
To me this isn’t queer
it seems very clear
I don’t get why this is so wrong
it just seems like everyone should belong

We talked about queer theory in class today. My understanding of it is that it is different from the “norm.” There isn’t anything that I can think that I do that is different from the norm.
This relates to Middlesex because the main character is different from the norm. She is not a boy or a girl. This is a result because her family is different from the norm. Her grandparents are really brother and sister. In today’s society that is not acceptable. In the past people married their cousins but not brothers and sisters. This book involves a lot of queer theory being that the whole family is different from the norm.
I am choosing the song Who’s To Say by Vanessa Carlton. It talks about how people are telling them what to do and how life is. She just wants to figure it out on her on.

We have started to watch The Color Purple in class. At the beginning of the movie there are some similarities like the characters. Things that are different are the things I don’t remember like when Shug goes to see her father during the church service . Also when Squeak said her name is Mary Agnes I don’t remember the dinner sence. I like the book better than the movie. The movie is sometimes very dry and boring. I can’t wait to see the rest of the movie.

For my final project I am going to work with Katie. We first decided that we wanted to do a game of some sort that’s when we decided on Jeopardy. We figured we would put it on a PowerPoint. The categories will be things like archetypes, stages of the monomyth, characters from the books that we have read. This is show what we have learned and it will help other people use their knowledge from the class. We figured that we could give some kind of prize to the winner.

Poem #25
Rhyme
Everything in life isn’t easy
Coming home is one
Sometimes it makes me uneasy
And I feel like my journey has just begun
My worlds seem like they are two
Sometimes they don’t seem to mesh
I wish they would stick like glue
I feel like I just need to refresh
I will learn how to deal
And make it work out
I like how I am starting to feel
I have erased all my doubt

The part of the monomyth we discussed was Master of Two Worlds. This is when the hero has to balance home and the new world. The example my group came up with is super heros. I am picking Spider-Man. Peter Parker is just a typical teenage boy. One day he is bitten by a gentically altered spider and everything changes. By the end of the first movie he decides to be Spider-Man. The second movie is all about Peter struggling with his duties of Spider-Man and his normal life. He gets fired from his job and is falling behind in school. Soon he decides to give up being Spider-Man. This is when he tries to get MJ his love back and she says it is too late. Then his best friend Harry figures out Peter is the one who killed his father. He is very angry and wants to kill Peter. Things start to get pretty messy for him. At the end of the movie he decides to become Spider-Man again. At the beginning of the third he is happy he is Spider-Man again. He has started to be able to balance his two worlds. He is going to propose to MJ. That is when things become more comfortable for him.
I think this stage in my life would be coming home from college and having to balance the two worlds. At college I have the freedom to do what when I want. I have no curfew, I can party when I want, and I can sleep til noon if I want to. When I am at home I have a curfew and I have a job I have to go to everyday. This world is a lot more restrictive. Trying to balance the two worlds takes time and patience. Eventually you work it out.
The song I am choosing is a Taylor Swift Song called Breathe. It is about a girl breaking up with a guy and he was her whole world. The verse that says
And we know it’s never simple,
Never easy.
Never a clean break, no one here to save me.
You’re the only thing I know like the back of my hand,
And I can’t,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to,
Breathe,
Without you,
But I have to.
She doesn’t want to go on without him but she has to learn how to do it. I feel thats what master of two worlds is about. You have to learn to deal with them and balance them.
